What should I do straight away?

  • Back up your data. As long as the screen still responds, make a backup: on an iPhone via iCloud or your computer, on Android via your Google account or the manufacturer's software. A damaged screen can fail completely at any time.
  • Protect against splinters. A screen protector or clear tape over the crack protects your fingers and holds loose splinters together.
  • Watch for warning signs. If the screen lifts at one edge, the battery is often swollen. Stop charging the device, switch it off and bring it in for repair promptly – a damaged battery can overheat.
  • Keep it away from water. Moisture gets in more easily through a crack. You can no longer rely on the water resistance.

When is a repair worth it?

In most cases, repairing is the better choice – especially if:

  • the device otherwise works perfectly and the battery still lasts well,
  • the manufacturer still provides software and security updates,
  • the repair costs significantly less than an equivalent device.

As a rough rule of thumb: if the estimate comes to less than half the price of an equivalent device, the repair is worth it. There's a practical advantage too: your phone is set up, with all your apps and data on it – after the repair, you carry on without moving anything over. And every repaired device is one less that has to be newly produced.

When does a new device make more sense?

  • The device no longer receives security updates. In the long run that's a risk, for example for e-banking.
  • Several faults come together, such as the screen, a weak battery and a loose charging port.
  • The frame is bent, or the device has also had water damage.
  • The repair costs almost as much as an equivalent new device.

In these cases, we're happy to advise you before you buy.

Original or equivalent: which spare part?

Replacement screens come in different qualities. Original parts match the factory screen. Equivalent parts from good manufacturers are cheaper and a solid choice for most needs. Differences show mainly in brightness, colours and power consumption – for example when an OLED screen is replaced with a simpler LCD.

On newer iPhones, the system flags an "unknown part" after a replacement with a non-original screen, and features such as True Tone may be missing. On Android devices with an in-display fingerprint sensor, the sensor often works only partially or not at all with basic replicas. We tell you beforehand which options are available for your device and what they mean.
